Planet Heroes™ DVD - "Here Comes the Sun"

I'm sure we have a few Planet Heroes™ fans who read Fun 4 The Children. If so here's something that you might enjoy.

Mattel is offering a free Planet Heroes™ DVD where you get to meet the newest Planet Heroes in "Here Come the Sun". The DVD is digitally mastered in full color and is 16.17 minutes with subject matter intended for children 3 years and older.

This DVD is available to U.S. residents only and only one per household.

About six to eight months ago Mattel offered a different Planet Heroes DVD that I order and received it very quickly. The state 12-14 weeks for delivery but it was much faster than that.

I don't think I have to tell you that this will probably go very quickly so act fast and enjoy your Planet Heroes DVD.

StoryLine Online

See and hear your story book read to you over at StoryLine Online. This website takes a new and exciting approach in introducing children to storytime.

BookPALS Storyline Online is a website that is sponsored by a grant from Superpages.com and it's a program of The Screen Actors Guild Foundation. It uses various, real life actors to read from a selection of stories on-line.

As of April 2008, the have twenty one different stories to choose from, with readings done by Caitlin Wachs, Tia and Tamera Mowry, Amanda Bynes, Melissa Gilbert, Elijah Wood, and Haylie Duff (just to name a few).

Using Storyline Online is very simple, as you choose the book you would like to read and then click "let's read it". The book will open up on the screen along with the actor who will introduce the book and then read you the story. Along the right side of the book, there are buttons to choose your Internet speed, captions on or off, and screen size. Leaving the captions on lets you child read along with the story and be sure to click full screen to enjoy the beautiful illustrations.

With each storybook, you will also find related activities and an activity guide to be used by both parents and children. Activities include drawing pictures about the book, writing about what you enjoyed most about the book, related readings and more.

Truly another wonderful and entertaining website on the Internet for our children and one that you should add to your children's bookmarks.

LOOKYBOOK

I'd like to share a wonderful website a came across that enables you to view picture books online, from cover to cover. The website is called Lookybook, and it's a fantastic way to read entire children's picture books online, for free, just like you would in a bookstore, without leaving the comfort of your home.

Lookbook offers a big selection of books from children's authors and illustrators. You don't have to register to use this site, but it does have it's benefits. If you decide to register (which is free), you can create your own virtual bookshelf, make comments about books, rate, share and purchase the books if you find one you like.

Reading the books is very easy. Just click on a book you would like to read and watch it shift to the right. Click on the book a second time to open it and flip through the pages.



The only minor problems I have with Lookybook is that in some of the books the words are a little small, making it hard to read (could just be my older age and eyesight fading). I do find that if I change my browser to full screen (F11 button on my computer) it helps.

All in all, I feel Lookybook is a great site, that's easy to use and sure to be a hit with your children.

Earth Day Coloring Pages

Earth Day began on April 22nd, 1970 and is celebrated every April 22 since or so the story goes. Plain and simple Earth Day is a day to remind us to take care of our Earth!

As part of my eight year old daughter wanting to help out spread the word about Earth Day, she printed out a bunch of these coloring pages earlier this afternoon, colored them and then wrote sayings and messages on the pictures. From there, she had me drive around the neighborhood posting them to poles, in storefronts, and handing to neighbors.

Tomorrow, it's on to a vacant field next to her favorite toy store, to clean up any garbage and plant flowers!

McGruff the Crime Dog On Gun Safety

This is a safety post for all families. Again, this is off the topic of being fun for your children, but every now and then when I come across something I feel is extremely important and helpful to all of us with children, I will post it.

Read or watch the news daily and you will see children being hurt by guns. Be it at your home, a friends house or out on the streets, it's happening everyday. Visit a news website online and punch in this topic and I'd bet you would find articles on daily occurrences. Visit Common Sense about Kids and Guns and look at the "In The News" section... once again daily occurrences. While your at their website, look toward the top of their site and read the stats that rotate. Unbelievable!

I was very happy to find a website (NSSF) that might be of help with this subject. They will let you order up to three copies (you can give to other family members, friends, etc) of "McGruff the Crime Dog On Gun Safety" videos.

Another helpful site, and one that I mentioned is Common Sense about Kids and Guns. Visit their website to learn more about a program called Project ChildSafe, which distributes free firearm safety kits through law enforcement departments and other agencies in your state. Search further around their website as they have some great resources.

Finally, make sure to visit McGruff.org to read more gun safety rules, print out a coloring page of McGruff's steps to gun safety, and read some comic strips to read what Scruff does when he sees a gun.

PETAKids Stickers

What is it that fascinates children about stickers? I don't know about anyone else but my children love stickers, it doesn't matter what kind of stickers they are, they want them. Then I have the joy of trying to get the stickers off of the places they aren't suppose to be, but that's another story.

Anyway, I thank Jordan for the e-mail letting us know that the PETAKids website is offering free stickers.

Free First Aid Kit

UPDATE: It seems as though this one is very limited. Here is an e-mail I received from them:

"While the online quiz is open to the public, first aid kits will only be mailed to addresses within the Avera service area (South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska.)"

They should have this posted on their website before you take the survey. My apologies to all.

This one is a little off topic as far as it being Fun for the children, but with children come accidents, so having a first aid kit on hand is a plus. Not to mention the fact that you can get this one for free by answering a short safety quiz.

They have good food, drink and plenty of fun for your children (in my case, my husband also). Children's Fire Safety Resources

I found a very helpful website to teach your children about fire safety with them having some fun at the same time.

The U.S. Fire Administration for Kids - USFA Kids, has some wonderful publications and other children's fire safety resources that you can download and print out on your computer. Resources include:

Activity sheets, word searches, mazes, coloring books, and an escape plan diagram for your children to draw up for your home (Very helpful). Parents there are also plenty of resources for us. Make sure you take a good look around their website as they do have plenty of resources to go through.

Before leaving their website, make sure you visit the "downloadable graphics" link in the sidebar, to print out a "JR. Fire Marshal Certificate" to present to your children for learning about fire safety.
