Free Crafts for Kids at Lakeshore Learning Stores

This one is for those of you with Lakeshore Learning Stores (USA) nearby. Every Saturday from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, the Lakeshore Learning Stores offers free crafts for kids ages 3 and up.

Make a Friendship Frame on August 1 2009 and then make sure you keep checking back at their website or in store for the next craft each week.

Lowe's Build and Grow Clinics

I thought I would give everyone a heads up about the wonderful clinics for children that Lowe's stores offer. Two Saturdays out of the month, Lowe’s offers free workshops for kids where they can build some pretty cool stuff.

The free workshops are held on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Lowe’s provides everything free of charge, and each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, a project themed patch and a merit certification upon completion of their free wooden project.

MakeBeliefsComix.com

We recently did a post on Pocket Doodles For Kids by Bill Zimmerman and while a was creating the post, I came to learn that Bill Zimmerman also publishes a fun website called MakeBeliefsComix.com.

Make Beliefs Comix is a free comic strip creation tool for kids of all ages. It provides a variety of templates, characters, and prompts for building their own comic strips, encouraging children to express themselves through writing.

From Bill Zimmerman:

I envisioned MakeBeliefsComix.com as a place for you to come to and have fun by creating your own world of comic strips. My hope is that by giving you a choice of characters with different moods and the chance to write words and thoughts for them, you will tap into your creativity and explore new possibilities. After all, there is no greater force in life than the power of the imagination to free us from our immediate problems and to spur our energies to find solutions to our befuddlements.


This site provides a format for creating your own comic strips, by sliding pictures of characters into the comic strip boxes, sizing characters, adding thought and speech bubbles, and then text to the comic.

Need an idea for your comic? Just click on the "Story Ideas" box on the bottom of their website and they will provide help through "make beliefs", to create your graphic story.

There's also a section of information for teachers listed in the tab at the bottom of their website, where teachers can find "21 Ways To Use MakeBeliefsComix.com In The Classroom".

You will also find a "Printables" tab where you can print out comics and single drawings to print, write and color.

After completing your comics you can email them or print them out once.

The Super Sleuth Hunny Pot Hunt at Disney Store - July 18, 2009

Visit your local Disney Store on Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. for a chance for your kids to become a full fledged Super Sleuth like the characters from “My Friends Tigger & Pooh.”

Kids ages three and up can join in the fun when they participate in the the Disney Store Super Sleuth Hunny Pot Hunt inspired by the popular Playhouse Disney series “My Friends Tigger & Pooh.”

Kids that participate will receive an activity sheet that leads them on a scavenger hunt throughout the store and as they find the hidden hunny pots, they will fill out the sheet by drawing the items they find. All successful sleuths will receive a certificate and a Super Sleuth mask.

Free, while supplies last.

I had a great time sitting with my daughter Samantha and I could see the wheels turning as she would choose pages from the Pocket Doodle For Kids to work on and smile and/or laugh as she was completing them. She took great pride in explaining her work!

National Geographic Kids is a free online portal where your children can learn all about animals, science, geography, history, art and cultures.

Your children can spend hours exploring the National Geographic Kids website looking at the outstanding photos, searching through the video gallery, engaging in brainteasers, puzzles and quizzes, science and nature stories, word games, and activities that your children can perform by themselves and with their parents, continuing their fun while learning offline.

This is a wonderful website for your children to use as a homework helper for school projects and assignments, as they can search search the huge database for many different subjects. (Homework Helper will be a new category on this blog)
