Bringing Up Hipster Kids in a Fashion Forward World

Some people say hipsters aren't cool or hip at all. They're just a bunch of judgmental wannabes who like to think they're not part of the mainstream culture, but actually following the trends, like owning a Mac or drinking lattes at a popular coffee shop. The clothes, the talk, and the drinks don't make a hipster. It's the attitude and way of thinking that form this new breed of nonconformists. Yet, this rising subculture among urban professionals can't be stopped. It has entered the realm of kids clothing online and offline with its crocheted caps and scarves worn with vintage shirts, skinny jeans, and ankle boots.

Dressing Up Your Kids Like Your Mini-Mes?

For centuries, parents have been notorious in dressing up their kids like their little Mini-Mes. They'd often put them in clothes that were cut in the same style as theirs. Today's fashion trends for kids seem no different with designer brands establishing their own lines for children. However, there's a little twist to this development.

Unlike in the 18th and 19th centuries when children were often bundled up in tight clothing, the recent shift towards hipster fashion made the cut and style of children's clothes more loose and conducive to natural movement. This is exactly the kind of fashion trend that fits children who love to run around, jump, hop, skip, and roll around in the grass.

Jumpers, pleated skirts, suspenders, cardigans, and hooded shirts are still hitting it on the nose with the little ones, but they've gone hipster. Checkered patterns, black and white stripes, and flowery designs still dominate kids clothes on the web, in malls, and at specialty shops. Striped leggings under ballerina skirts go well with a pair of colorful sneakers. Alternatively, a short bolero worn over a cardigan or hooded sweatshirt adds warmth when going out on a cool day.

Hipster is a Fashionable Expression of One's Personality

But now, the leggings have become knee-high socks worn with a long sleeved dress printed with zany designs of staring cats and falling stars or little hummingbirds flitting between blooming huge daisies. Little boys cover their heads with a knitted beanie or a crocheted hunter's cap and wear a checkered shirt with its sleeves rolled up over a plain white tee and a pair of skinny jeans. Is this hipster fashion? Whether or not it is, what's most important in dressing kids in the hipster fashion is to mix and match clothes based on your child's preferences.

In truth, freedoms of choice and self-expression are the underlying principles of the hipster subculture. The Urban Dictionary defines it best: "Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their twenties and thirties that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter." Thus, hipster clothing for children seem an anathema to the subculture definition. Nevertheless, the misappropriation of the term to describe the new trend in kids clothing online and offline is not so bad. In fact, the quality of clothes we see peddled in mall shops and specialty stores are much more integral to the needs of the modern-day child.
