Born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. Mr. Lincoln was president when the Civil War began and successfully led the country through the war, ending slavery and promoting economic modernization. He issued his Emancipation Proclamation (proclaimed the freedom of 3.1 million of the nation's 4 million slaves) in 1863, and promoted the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, abolishing slavery. His Gettysburg Address speech is considered one of the greatest speeches of all time.

On April 14, 1865 President Lincoln and Mrs. Lincoln were attending a play at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. While there he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
